Signed and Dated Old Master English Watercolor and Ink Wash of Landscape 1769
Signed and Dated 18th Century English Watercolor and Ink Wash of Landscape, dated with an inscription 1769. This is a fine, ink and watercolor drawing on wove paper of the English countryside with a dirt road, with a wooden fence and trees on the right side, and trees on the left side. The drawing is signed with a monogram that reads SC in the lower central right area in between the fence. The drawing is on hand woven paper that has a watermark that reads "JWHATMAN" and has vertical lines when held up against the light. This appears to be a set of two drawings that were made at the same time and of the same subject- there is a very similar one that I have listed that is also from 1769, they were probably done as a competition or rivalry to see who could do the better likeness.
About the watermark: Watermark: James Whatman, the Elder, (1702-1759) was a paper maker, born in Kent, United Kingdom, who made revolutionary advances to the craft in England. He is noted as the inventor of wove paper, an innovation used for high-quality art and printing. The techniques continued to be developed by his son, James Whatman the Younger.
